I think .kiwi has great potential, because:

It is related to national identity; it is, among others, well suited for personal domains. The development in latest years shows that it is good to have own domain, because people aren’t dependant on the service providers (e-mail or blog providers etc…).

Another reason for .kiwi is that .nz TLD does not offer second-level domains, so people who miss that can register .kiwi

Why we need the greater dotted Kiwi?

In our increasingly globalised world we are seeing groups of people trying to ensure that they maintain a sense of national or even tribal/clan/ethnic identity.  The use of the computers and in particular the internet is now inextricably woven into our daily lives and has both facilitated an explosion in connectivity but also resulted in a shift towards a homogeneity in the online addresses that we can use.  These addresses are well suited to the needs of governments, corporations and large institutions but at the expense of identity.

The “.kiwi” will address this imbalance by offering kiwis with a mechanism for providing focus on our particular characteristics that set us aside from the rest of the world.  The term kiwi evokes positive meaning for all New Zealanders and our international friends and colleagues, it is both casual and yet accepted in a formal setting.  The .kiwi domain can provide us with a powerful and symbolic tag that will provide a point of difference for us in the online community.

As ever proud to be a .kiwi

I believe the .kiwi domain will help to make New Zealand’s presence on the web even more unique. More and more people are starting to know that the word “kiwi”  is synonymous with New Zealand – the .kiwi domain extension will take this  concept further, adding a distinct flavour to branding that comes with New Zealand  made products. I would be happy to have a .kiwi extension for my website, as I like  foreign nationals to know that I am a New Zealander, and that the .kiwi extension  represents a unique opportunity for branding New Zealand made products.

Many people throughout the world identify themselves as Kiwis. One has only to see the number of young New Zealanders at Gallipoli each year for the remembrance service to see this. A Google search for “Gallipoli Kiwi” gets 295,000 results!

The present .nz domain is limited to individuals and organisations having to register at the third level as in bloggs.gen.nz or bloggs.gen.nz. None of these is in my view anywhere near as intuitive as bloggs.kiwi.

Dot Kiwi have committed to supporting the Christchurch rebuild and at this stage every little helps as funds to apply to this effort are in short supply due to the global financial crisis.

The expansion of the TLD space to include .kiwi offers New Zealanders the opportunity to get a choice of domain name that properly reflects their identity.

I sincerely hope that Dot Kiwi will be successful.
